A Training in Web Design and Mobile App Development

The ICT Club at Jinja College recently held a training session on web design and mobile app development. Organized by KAWA in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the training took place on October 22, 2024, in the Jinja College Computer Laboratory. This program introduced students to essential digital skills and inspired them to explore how technology can address real-world challenges.

Purpose of the Training

The main goal of the training was to give students the foundational knowledge needed to eventually build their own websites and mobile apps. It aimed to:

  • Teach practical skills in web design and app development.
  • Encourage innovative thinking to solve problems in the school and community.
  • Provide an introduction to tools and technologies used in software development.

This training is the first step in preparing students for hands-on sessions where they will create projects like a student information portal, a school event calendar, or a local business directory.

Activities Covered in the Training

The training followed a structured approach to ensure students understood the steps involved in developing websites and apps:

  • Brainstorming Project Ideas
Students explored different project ideas, focusing on solutions that could benefit their school and the local community.
  • Learning About Requirements Analysis
Students were taught how to gather information about user needs by conducting surveys and interviews with classmates and teachers.
  • Understanding Design Concepts
The basics of creating user-friendly designs were introduced. Students used tools like WordPress and Figma to visualize their ideas.
  • Introduction to Coding
Students were exposed to programming concepts and technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which form the foundation of web and app development.

Next Steps for the ICT Club

While this training focused on building a strong foundation, the ICT Club members will soon participate in practical sessions to create real applications. These hands-on workshops will allow students to:

  • Work in teams to develop and design functional apps or websites.
  • Apply their skills to solve specific challenges, such as creating a student portal or event calendar.
  • Test and deploy their projects for real-world use.

Conclusion

The training program at Jinja College ICT Club is a significant step toward empowering students with the skills and confidence to use technology effectively. KAWA and UCC remain committed to supporting the students as they embark on the next phase of their journey.
