From Kampala to Masindi – Kiyuya Seed Secondary School Embraces Digital Transformation

On 23rd June 2025, the road to Masindi was filled with excitement as the KAWA ICT Club team, in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), launched the ICT Club at Kiyuya Seed Secondary School. Located approximately 220 km northwest of Kampala, the journey to Kiyuya Seed SS takes you through the scenic Kampala–Hoima–Masindi highway. The school lies just 25 km from Masindi Town and about 40 km from Hoima, making it a strategic hub for students from neighboring districts like Kiryandongo, Buliisa, and Hoima.
The event was spearheaded by Christine Nambi, a KAWA facilitator, who led an engaging series of sessions designed to inspire digital curiosity and creativity among the students. The launch was graced by the school’s headteacher, Rukundo Joseph Mary, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to UCC for its continuous efforts to support education, particularly in rural schools. He remarked, “This ICT Club will open doors for our students to explore opportunities beyond the classroom, building the digital skills needed for today’s world.”
A Day of Innovation and Learning
The launch event brought together 45 enthusiastic students from both lower and upper secondary classes, all eager to join the newly formed ICT Club. After the official inauguration, the students jumped straight into a practical session that included photo editing, basic coding, and internet safety lessons. They were also introduced to KAWA CONNECT, a cutting-edge digital learning platform designed to promote self-learning and collaborative innovation.
A highlight of the day was the interactive leadership session, where the students elected their first ICT Club leaders: Muwanga Henry (President, S.5), Kirabo Peace (Vice President, S.6), Otema Martine (Publicity, S.3), and Otiakoha Ibraham (Treasurer). These leaders will steer the club’s activities, including weekly digital workshops, coding challenges, and creative project development.
The Role of ICT in Transforming Education
In her address, Christine Nambi emphasized that ICT is more than just a subject; it is a tool for innovation, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving. She encouraged students to use technology not only for academic purposes but also for creating solutions that benefit their communities. The students responded with great enthusiasm, showcasing their eagerness to learn and explore digital tools.
Feedback and Future Plans
The event highlighted both opportunities and challenges. While students showed remarkable willingness to learn, the school’s computers were noted to be slow and in need of updates, which limits access to advanced skills training. It was recommended that a technical review and upgrade of the ICT lab be prioritized to ensure smooth learning.
Looking ahead, the Kiyuya Seed SS ICT Club will continue with weekly hands-on sessions, termly coding clinics, and inter-school ICT competitions. KAWA and UCC will provide ongoing mentorship, training, and resources to ensure the club becomes a hub of innovation for Masindi District and beyond.
