On 26th June 2025, Kazo Secondary School in Kazo District hosted the official launch and training of its ICT Club, facilitated by Kyasima Freedom from KAWA Uganda (Kisubi Associated Writers’ Agency) in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The event marked a significant step in strengthening digital literacy, innovation, and project-based learning among students.

Overview of the ICT Club Launch

The launch is part of UCC and KAWA’s national ICT club initiative, which aims to promote hands-on digital skills in secondary schools. It was noted with encouragement that Kazo Secondary School already had a thriving ICT club, thanks to the commitment of its patron and school leadership. This existing structure provided an excellent foundation for the new training program.

Although the school has over 70 ICT Club members, the training session was attended by 26 enthusiastic learners, as some students were away participating in sports activities. The training introduced students to:

  • Mobile app creation using MIT App Inventor.
  • Basic coding and programming principles.
  • Internet safety, responsible online behavior, and digital literacy practices.

Challenges Identified

The school’s ICT lab, though functional, faces several technical challenges. Most computers were found to be slow and running outdated software, limiting the ability of teachers to deliver advanced ICT lessons. This was a recurring concern expressed by the headteacher, Akahingira Amos, who emphasized the urgent need for technical maintenance and upgrades to enhance the lab’s performance.

Recommendations

  • Technical Review: A professional technician should assess the computers to optimize performance and update necessary software.
  • Resource Support: The school needs additional modern computers to accommodate the growing number of ICT Club members.
  • Mentorship & Capacity Building: Regular training sessions by UCC and KAWA will ensure that both students and teachers remain updated with emerging digital trends.

Participation and Feedback

The training attracted students from both lower and upper secondary levels, demonstrating balanced and inclusive participation. The learners expressed a strong willingness to learn and excitement about the possibilities of coding and app development.

Conclusion and Way Forward

The launch of the ICT Club is just the beginning of a transformative journey. Under the guidance of KAWA and UCC, students will engage in weekly digital literacy workshops, coding clinics, app development projects, and inter-school ICT competitions. KAWA will continue providing access to the KAWA CONNECT platform, mentorship, and digital content to keep the club vibrant and productive.

“This ICT Club is a platform where our students will not only learn but create, innovate, and solve real-world challenges,” remarked Headteacher Akahingira Amos.
