On June 4, 2025, a significant event unfolded at Nabingoola Public Secondary School in Mubende District: the official launch of its ICT Club. This initiative, proudly supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and Kisubi Associated Writers’ Agency (KAWA), aims to equip students with vital digital knowledge, ignite their passion for technology, and cultivate innovation for both academic success and future career pathways. The training, held at the school’s ICT Lab, was expertly facilitated by Christine Nambi.

The launch saw enthusiastic participation, primarily from Senior Two and Senior Three students. We observed a particularly strong presence of female students in these grades, which is a promising indicator of growing interest in ICT among girls at the school. All attendees eagerly signed the register and provided their contact details, demonstrating their commitment and readiness for future ICT follow-up sessions. It’s worth noting that students from Senior Four, Five, and Six were not present, possibly due to exam preparations or scheduling conflicts.

To ensure the club’s continued success and long-term impact, several key recommendations have been identified. We encourage actively involving Senior 4-6 students in future sessions, as ICT skills are crucial for their career readiness and higher education pursuits. The curriculum should initially focus on foundational topics such as typing, internet safety, Microsoft Office proficiency, and introductory coding with Scratch or Blockly. Given the strong female engagement, we propose implementing dedicated mentorship programs to further nurture girls in ICT. Establishing a student executive team to lead club activities, supported by a teacher patron and regular check-ins from KAWA and UCC, is also essential. Lastly, ensuring consistent access to digital learning materials, offline resources like KAWA CONNECT, and regular hands-on practical sessions will be vital for sustained learning.

The launch of the ICT Club here marks a pivotal moment in expanding digital inclusion across the Mubende District. With 57 actively participating learners, predominantly girls in lower secondary, the future of ICT engagement at the school looks incredibly promising. We believe that continued support from UCC and KAWA will be instrumental in ensuring the club’s lasting impact and sustainability. The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive; they expressed genuine happiness and eagerness to acquire new skills, and are keenly anticipating future competitions.
