Kabezi Seed Secondary School Ignites Digital Learning with ICT Club Launch

On June 20, 2025, Kabezi Seed Secondary School in Ntungamo District marked a significant stride into the digital era with the official inauguration of its ICT Club. This pivotal event, orchestrated by Kyasima Freedom from KAWA Uganda (Kisubi Associated Writers’ Agency) in collaboration with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), aimed to equip students with essential digital competencies and cultivate a spirit of creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. The launch garnered enthusiastic participation from students across Senior 1 to Senior 6, who engaged in interactive sessions with great eagerness to explore digital tools, coding fundamentals, and project-based innovations designed to address real-world community challenges. Following this successful launch, plans were established to commence regular ICT Club activities in July 2025. These activities will focus on app development using MIT App Inventor, comprehensive digital literacy workshops, and preparation for upcoming regional ICT competitions.
A core objective of the training was to introduce students to practical ICT skills and demonstrate how technology can be leveraged for both academic and personal advancement. The ICT Club is envisioned as a vibrant center for weekly coding clinics, app creation projects, and innovative problem-solving sessions. Mbaine Nicholus, the Headteacher (Tel: 0772829993), lauded the initiative and pledged the school’s unwavering support, assuring that the ICT Club would evolve into a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and creativity.

Despite the promising start, the training encountered several hurdles. Heavy rainfall unfortunately disrupted some sessions, and the school’s computers were found to be slow and running outdated software, which limited the extent of hands-on learning for the students. To address these issues, it was recommended that a technician conduct a thorough assessment of the computers, followed by a necessary upgrade of software and systems to ensure optimal functionality. The acquisition of additional computers, routers, and backup power solutions were also identified as crucial priorities to accommodate the expanding membership of the ICT Club.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with students expressing their excitement and noting the valuable insights gained in mobile app development and digital innovation. The ICT Club Patron extended appreciation to UCC and KAWA for their efforts, committing to continuously nurture students’ skills through ongoing training and mentorship.
Special gratitude is extended to UCC, under the leadership of Hon. George William Nyombi Thembo (Executive Director), James Beronda (UCUSAF Director), Arnold Bareba Mujuni (Head of Technical Services), and Carolyn Vunia (Manager, ICT Clubs), along with all the dedicated UCC officers who have tirelessly championed ICT development in schools across Uganda. Their contributions, including ICT lab donations, internet support, teacher training, and annual ICT exhibitions, have significantly elevated the standard of digital education nationwide. Heartfelt thanks also go to Engineer Paul Rukundo, Executive Director of KAWA Uganda, for his visionary leadership and consistent support of ICT Clubs. His efforts in providing mentorship, KAWA CONNECT digital resources, and project-based learning tools have been instrumental in the success of these programs. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education and Sports, led by First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, is highly appreciated for prioritizing ICT in the new competence-based curriculum and actively supporting schools in embracing digital transformation.
The launch of the ICT Club marks merely the beginning of its journey. To fully realize its potential, the school earnestly appeals to Old Boys (OBs), Old Girls (OGs), partners, and well-wishers for their support. Contributions are sought to: Donate modern computers, routers, or projectors to enhance the ICT Lab; Provide mentorship programs or workshops to inspire students; Fund internet connectivity and power backup solutions to ensure uninterrupted learning; and Support regional and national competitions to showcase student innovations. Your invaluable contribution will play a crucial role in transforming Kabezi Seed Secondary School into a prominent digital innovation hub, empowering young learners to thrive and excel in Uganda’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
