ICT Club Launched at Nawaningi Seed Secondary School to Boost Digital Skills in Kamuli District

Nawaningi Seed Secondary School is a vibrant educational institution located in Nawaningi Sub-county, Kamuli District, in the Eastern Region of Uganda. The school is approximately 120 kilometers northeast of Kampala, along the main road connecting Iganga and Kamuli, making it easily accessible for learners and visitors. It is situated near the town of Kamuli, a key commercial and administrative hub in the district, providing students with proximity to local services and opportunities for community engagement.

The school currently hosts a student population of 44 learners from Senior One to Senior Six, supported by a committed teaching staff. Nawaningi Seed Secondary School is equipped with a full desktop computer set and internet connectivity, enabling students to engage in digital learning and technology-driven projects.

ICT Club Launch Overview:
On 27th February 2026, Nawaningi Seed Secondary School officially launched its ICT Club, an initiative aimed at enhancing digital literacy and fostering innovation among learners. The activity was conducted by Kisubi Associated Writers Agency under the ICT Clubs programme, supported by the Uganda Communications Commission and Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund. The session was facilitated by Ms. Valeria Wanyana, who guided students through foundational digital skills and hands-on ICT training.

Learners’ Participation and Expectations:
A total of 44 students and three teachers participated in the launch. Learners were eager to acquire practical computer skills, including ICT lab management, internet usage, coding, and digital content creation. Many expressed interest in teamwork, mentorship, problem-solving, and exploring innovative ways to use technology to address community challenges.

Objectives of the ICT Club:
The ICT Club was established to:

  • Equip students with practical ICT skills beyond classroom theory.
  • Promote responsibility and ownership of school ICT resources.
  • Enable students to prepare for national ICT competitions, including NCC 2026.
  • Foster innovation and problem-solving in school and community contexts.

Training and Resources Provided:
Students received interactive training that included:

  • Introduction to ICT Clubs programme objectives.
  • Awareness on digital skills, technology use, and innovation.
  • Access to www.ictclubs.ug, a platform with tutorials and learning resources.
  • Guidance on participation in future ICT projects and competitions.

The launch also included interaction with the school administration and the ICT patron, emphasizing sustainable club operations, leadership, and accountability. An ICT Club handbook and a constitution template were shared to guide club operations and ensure long-term sustainability.

Challenges and Recommendations:
Key challenges identified included:

  • Limited internet connectivity affecting online learning.
  • Need for enhanced teacher training and ICT competency.

Recommendations for the school include:

  • Allocating regular time for ICT Club activities.
  • Supporting students to develop projects that address real community challenges.
  • Providing additional ICT resources and access to digital learning materials.

Conclusion:
The ICT Club launch at Nawaningi Seed Secondary School represents a significant milestone in advancing digital education in Kamuli District. With the support of UCC, UCUSAF, and KAWA Uganda, students are now empowered with essential digital skills, inspired to innovate, and prepared for future opportunities in ICT and technology innovation competitions like NCC 2026. This initiative sets the stage for sustainable ICT engagement, leadership development, and digital problem-solving within the school and the wider community.
