Lyantonde Senior Secondary School, located in Lyantonde District, has made a remarkable step toward digital transformation with the launch of its ICT Club on 9th July 2025. The event, held in the school’s ICT Lab, was facilitated by Mr. Richard Chole from KAWA (Kisubi Associated Writers’ Agency). Students were also addressed via video by the UCC Director, Hon. Nyombo Thembo, who emphasized the critical role of ICT in modern education and highlighted UCC’s contributions since 2006 in bridging the digital divide across Uganda.

The ICT Club has been established to equip students with essential technology skills, focusing on practical activities such as coding, programming, web design, and digital content creation. Through this initiative, learners will enhance their problem-solving abilities, develop critical thinking, and improve their digital literacy. The club also encourages teamwork and collaboration through group projects and peer-to-peer learning, helping students to communicate effectively and explore creative ideas.

Following the launch, students engaged in a hands-on coding session, where they were introduced to Visual Studio Code (VS Code) as a programming environment and began learning Python. This was the start of a termly Coding Clinic, designed to give learners practical experience and confidence in software development.

The Headteacher, expressed appreciation for the launch, noting that the ICT Club would “empower students to become creators of technology rather than mere consumers, preparing them for real-world problem-solving.” Teachers in charge of ICT and the club patron were present and shared their enthusiasm. The patron stated, “This club is a gateway for our students to unlock innovation and digital creativity, moving beyond theory into practical application.”

During the event, challenges were noted, including the slow performance of school computers and outdated software, which hinder the smooth implementation of ICT activities. It was recommended that a technician evaluate and upgrade the systems to improve their efficiency.

KAWA extends its heartfelt thanks to UCC for its unwavering support of the education sector, especially rural schools, by providing resources, mentorship, and initiatives that promote digital literacy. The launch attracted students from both lower and upper secondary levels, showcasing inclusive interest and excitement for technology.

Looking forward, the ICT Club will conduct weekly workshops, inter-school competitions, and project showcases to keep students actively engaged. KAWA and UCC will continue to provide mentorship, digital resources, and training opportunities to ensure the club remains innovative and impactful.
