On March 3, 2025, a significant stride towards digital empowerment was made at Mazzi Vocational Secondary School, located in Kamira Sub- County, Mazzi Parish, within Luweero District. The school hosted a successful ICT Club launch and training report, marking a pivotal moment in its commitment to equipping students with vital 21st-century skills. The training was conducted at the school’s own ICT Lab, attended by 6 staff members.

Training Highlights and Key Topics Covered

The comprehensive training session covered a range of essential topics designed to foster digital literacy and practical ICT skills. Key areas included:

  1. Introduction to ICT Club and Its Purpose: Participants gained an understanding of the club’s role in promoting digital literacy, innovation, and responsible management of the ICT Lab.
  2. ICT Lab Management and Sustainability: Best practices for maintaining computers, ensuring proper use, and keeping the ICT Lab operational for future students were discussed.
  3. Basic Computer Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Students acquired practical skills to fix common computer issues, perform software updates, and prevent system failures, empowering them to manage their own resources.
  4. Internet Safety and Cybersecurity Awareness: Critical knowledge on safe internet usage, online privacy, cybersecurity threats, and methods to protect personal data was imparted.
  5. Digital Skills Beyond the Curriculum: Hands-on training in advanced computer applications, coding basics, and the use of digital tools for learning and problem-solving expanded students’ horizons.
  6. Networking and Internet Usage: Participants learned how networks function, how to connect to the internet securely, and how to optimize internet resources for learning.
  7. Engagement with UCC/UCUSAF on ICT Matters: Discussions focused on how students can actively participate in ICT development, provide feedback, and benefit from UCC initiatives, connecting them to broader national efforts.
  8. Encouraging Innovation and ICT Competitions: Opportunities for students to develop creative ICT projects and participate in local and national competitions organized by UCC were explored, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and application of skills.

During the training, 19 networked computers were utilized, providing a valuable hands-on experience for the attendees. All participating teachers were equipped with smart devices (smartphones or tablets), highlighting a foundational level of digital readiness among the staff.

Challenges and Recommendations for Growth

Despite the positive engagement, one significant challenge noted was insufficient funding for equipment. This suggests a need for ongoing investment to fully equip the lab and ensure all students have access to the necessary tools for advanced learning.

A key observation was that the majority of the participants mobilized for the launch were Senior 1-3 learners. To ensure the long-term sustainability and broader impact of the ICT Club, a crucial recommendation is to actively engage other classes to join. Encouraging participation from Senior One, Senior Three, and Senior Four students will help build a strong, continuous pipeline of talent and leadership within the club, fostering a school-wide culture of digital literacy and innovation.

The ICT Club launch at Mazzi Vocational Secondary School marks a vital step in empowering its students with essential digital skills. The comprehensive training provided a strong foundation, and despite funding challenges, the enthusiasm for technology is clear. With continued efforts to engage a wider student body and secure necessary resources, the club is set to become a vibrant hub for digital education and innovation in Luweero District.
