Namwezzi S.S Joins Uganda’s Digital Future with ICT Club Initiative

On 10th March 2025, Namwezzi Secondary School in Buikwe District joined Uganda’s national ICT Club initiative with a successful launch and student training session. Backed by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and implemented by KAWA Uganda, the event brought together learners and teachers to explore digital literacy, responsible ICT lab management, and innovation-based learning.

The training, held at the school’s ICT lab in Njeru Town Council, was facilitated by KAWA Uganda and attended by five staff members and a group of enthusiastic students. Using 18 fully networked desktop computers, the session combined hands-on technical instruction with open discussions on the role of ICT Clubs in shaping future-ready learners.
The day began with an introduction to the purpose of ICT Clubs—highlighting their role in fostering digital responsibility, improving ICT access, and promoting creative problem-solving in schools. From there, students were guided through core lab management principles, such as equipment care, maintenance routines, and reporting system faults—practices essential for keeping school ICT resources functional and accessible.

One of the major training segments focused on basic troubleshooting. Learners gained practical skills in identifying and resolving common computer issues, updating software, and preventing system errors. The facilitators also introduced network fundamentals—how computers connect and communicate—and offered guidance on using the internet efficiently and safely.
In addition to core skills, the training session encouraged students to go beyond the curriculum. Participants explored coding basics, learned how to apply digital tools in academic research, and discussed how to turn ICT knowledge into creative school projects. These activities were linked to wider opportunities offered by UCC, including participation in national innovation competitions.
Teachers played an active role throughout the day, with all five staff members using smart devices to support demonstrations and content delivery. Their involvement strengthened the message that ICT integration isn’t just about access—it’s about mindset, mentorship, and sustainability.
While the session was generally productive, a noticeable challenge was the lack of interest in ICT among some students. Facilitators noted that this could be addressed through regular engagement, club-led projects, and peer-driven activities that make digital learning more relatable and rewarding.

The training concluded with a reminder of the club’s future responsibilities and potential. Students were encouraged to collaborate on innovation challenges, explore UCC-supported learning platforms, and build confidence in applying ICT both inside and outside the classroom.
With a foundational training now in place, Namwezzi Secondary School is well on its way to becoming a stronger player in Uganda’s digital transformation efforts. Continued support from KAWA and UCC will ensure that the school’s ICT Club remains active, inclusive, and impactful throughout the academic year.
