Bishop Willigers SS Launches ICT Club to Build Digital Literacy in Bugweri

On 19th February 2025, Bishop Willigers Secondary School in Namunyumya, Bugweri District officially launched its ICT Club with an interactive training session facilitated by KAWA Uganda under the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) ICT Clubs Program. The initiative drew participation from nine staff members and a cohort of students, mainly from Senior Two, who were introduced to practical digital skills and foundational knowledge to manage and sustain ICT resources.

The training was hosted within the school’s ICT laboratory, which currently supports 12 desktop computers—11 of which are networked. Teachers and learners engaged with both theoretical and hands-on activities throughout the day. With all participating staff using smart devices, facilitation was smooth, and access to digital content was well-supported.
Sessions kicked off with an overview of what ICT Clubs are and why they matter. Students were introduced to the core objectives of the UCC ICT Clubs initiative—namely, promoting digital literacy, encouraging innovation, and creating ownership over school ICT infrastructure. This was followed by a breakdown of how to maintain ICT labs, manage shared equipment, and keep systems functional for future use.
Students also received practical training in troubleshooting common computer issues. Topics included software updates, diagnosing basic faults, and maintaining antivirus protection. In addition, they were introduced to concepts of cybersecurity, such as protecting online identities and recognizing digital threats—an area of increasing relevance for students engaging with online platforms.
The facilitators also encouraged learners to explore digital skills beyond the classroom. Training covered advanced computer applications, the basics of computer networking, and how to make productive use of the internet for research and learning. A discussion on innovation opportunities allowed learners to reflect on how they can apply ICT skills to real-world challenges and take part in competitions organized by UCC and UCUSAF.
While the training was effective in delivering its core goals, some administrative challenges were noted. With limited availability of the ICT lab, scheduling regular club meetings may prove difficult unless adjustments are made to accommodate the club’s needs. Additionally, the current membership was largely drawn from Senior Two classes, prompting recommendations for the school to expand involvement to learners in other levels to ensure balanced participation and leadership succession.
With the ICT Club now officially in place, Bishop Willigers SS has established a pathway for structured digital skills development. KAWA Uganda will continue offering mentorship, training support, and opportunities for national engagement through the ICT Clubs framework. With the support of committed teachers and an eager student body, the school is positioned to foster a culture of innovation and digital responsibility in the Bugweri region.
