On 18th February 2025, Bubinga High School in Bugweri District officially became part of Uganda’s growing ICT Clubs network. The launch, facilitated by KAWA Uganda under the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) initiative, brought together 15 staff members and a cohort of students for a full-day training session aimed at promoting digital literacy, responsible technology use, and innovation in learning.

Held at the school’s ICT lab in Butaba along the Iganga–Tororo Road, the session introduced learners to the goals and structure of the ICT Club program. Participants were taken through key areas such as ICT lab maintenance, sustainability practices, and the importance of student-led leadership in ensuring continuity of ICT activities. With all teachers in attendance owning smart devices, the session was well-supported from both a facilitation and engagement perspective.

Though the school had only eight networked computers available during the training, learners made the most of the resources at hand. Students were taught practical computer maintenance skills, including how to perform software updates, troubleshoot basic system issues, and manage hardware responsibly. They also explored the fundamentals of networking and secure internet usage, learning how digital tools can be used effectively in both academic and personal settings.

A dedicated portion of the training focused on internet safety and cybersecurity awareness. Facilitators guided learners through real-world scenarios involving data protection, phishing threats, and the impact of digital footprints. These discussions were complemented by hands-on exercises that introduced students to advanced computer applications and basic programming using open-source tools.

In addition to technical training, students engaged in conversations around innovation and national-level ICT competitions. The facilitators encouraged learners to begin thinking about how to use their ICT knowledge to create simple, real-world solutions—and outlined how schools like Bubinga can participate in UCC-supported competitions throughout the academic year.

However, the session also revealed a notable gap: most of the school’s computers lacked essential software and licensed tools, particularly those needed for programming and digital design. Facilitators recommended that the school prioritize acquiring necessary licenses and software to enable full participation in innovation activities and to build a more versatile digital environment.

Another observation was that the training mainly attracted Senior Two learners. To ensure a stronger and more diverse club, the school was advised to engage students from all class levels. This would support mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and consistent leadership within the ICT Club.

With the official launch completed, Bubinga High School now has a functioning ICT Club backed by trained teachers, equipped learners, and continued support from KAWA Uganda. As the club begins its journey, the school is expected to benefit from follow-up mentorship, technical support, and participation in national digital innovation platforms spearheaded by UCC.
