On 24th February 2026, Kiira College Butiki in Jinja City’s Northern Division took an important step towards strengthening digital learning, learner innovation, and practical technology engagement through the official launch and training of its ICT Club.

The activity was conducted by the KAWA ICT Clubs Team, represented by Wanyana Valeria, as part of the ongoing effort to support schools in building active, learner-centred ICT Clubs that can help students use technology to solve real-life problems in their communities.

Although Kiira College Butiki already had an existing ICT Club, it had not yet been formally launched. This visit therefore provided an opportunity to give the club a clear direction, introduce learners and teachers to the broader objectives of the ICT Clubs programme, and inspire students to begin thinking beyond ordinary computer use towards innovation, creativity, and problem-solving.

The session brought together 25 students from Senior One to Senior Six, together with one teacher. The ICT Club Patron, Mr Kayaka John, and the school leadership under Headteacher Mr Ssemwanga Moses, welcomed the initiative and expressed commitment to supporting the growth of the club within the school.

During the training, learners were introduced to the purpose of ICT Clubs and the role they can play in helping students develop digital skills, teamwork, confidence, and creativity. The students were encouraged to look around their school and community, identify challenges, and begin imagining how technology could be used to provide practical solutions.

The KAWA team also sensitised learners about technology, digital skills, innovation, and responsible participation in ICT-related activities. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of project development, participation in future innovation programmes, and preparing for opportunities such as the NCC ICT Competition, as well as other UCC/UCUSAF-supported ICT engagements.

A laptop and projector were used during the training session to support presentation and discussion. However, the team also noted some challenges that may need attention as the club grows. These included limited internet connectivity, which may affect access to online learning resources, and the need for further teacher training to strengthen ICT confidence and competency within the school.

Despite these challenges, the launch was successful and promising. Kiira College Butiki demonstrated readiness to support ICT Club activities and to prepare learners for meaningful participation in technology and innovation programmes. The presence of an already existing club provided a strong foundation upon which the school can now build a more active, organised, and impactful ICT Club.

Going forward, the school is encouraged to allocate regular time for ICT Club meetings, support the patron in guiding learners through practical project development, and continue improving access to ICT equipment and digital learning resources. With consistent support, Kiira College Butiki’s ICT Club has the potential to become a strong platform for nurturing young innovators who can use technology to serve their school and community.

The launch at Kiira College Butiki was not just an event. It was a call to action for learners to begin seeing technology as a tool for creativity, service, innovation, and future opportunity.
