All Saints SS Ocibal Opens a New Digital Chapter Through ICT Club Training
All Saints SS Ocibal in Arua District has joined the growing network of schools embracing learner-led digital transformation through the ICT Clubs programme. On Wednesday, 25th February 2026, the school hosted an in-school ICT Club launch and training session facilitated by Noah Okwalinga on behalf of Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA).
The activity was conducted under the ICT Clubs programme supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and UCUSAF, with the aim of helping schools build active ICT Clubs that promote digital skills, innovation, responsible technology use, and sustainability of school computer laboratories.
The training brought together learners, school leaders, and ICT teachers for a practical and inspiring session focused on how students can become active participants in the digital future of their school and community. The school leadership, led by Headteacher Mr Edriga Isaac, together with ICT Teacher Mr Omara David, welcomed the initiative and supported the establishment of the club structures.
Before the session began, learners were invited to share what they expected from the ICT Club. Their responses showed great interest in gaining practical computer skills beyond normal classroom learning. Many learners wanted to understand how to maintain and protect ICT equipment, use the internet better, learn coding, explore innovation, and prepare for future careers in the digital world. Others expressed interest in teamwork, mentorship, creativity, and solving real-life problems using technology.
The KAWA facilitator explained that an ICT Club is not just a group of students who use computers. It is a platform for responsibility, creativity, leadership, and problem-solving. Learners were guided to understand that the club can help them take ownership of their school computer laboratory, support proper use of ICT resources, and develop practical skills that can benefit both the school and the wider community.
As part of the launch, learners were introduced to key areas of digital skills development, including ICT lab management, basic computer maintenance, troubleshooting, internet safety, cybersecurity awareness, innovation, coding, and introductory exposure to Artificial Intelligence. The training placed strong emphasis on responsible handling of ICT equipment, safe use of the internet, and the need for learners to use technology in ethical and productive ways.
KAWA also provided educational materials to support continued learning after the launch. These included PowerPoint presentations, practical demonstrations, case studies, interactive exercises, and access to the ICT Clubs website, www.ictclubs.ug. Learners and teachers were encouraged to use the platform for tutorials, innovation resources, and club support materials.
The official launch was strengthened by a recorded speech message from the Executive Director of UCC, Mr Nyombi Thembo. His message reminded learners that digital skills are now essential for education, innovation, and national development. It also encouraged students to become responsible users of technology and active contributors to the sustainability of school ICT laboratories.
During the visit, KAWA worked with the school administration, ICT teachers, and the club patron to establish the ICT Club and guide the formation of student leadership structures. Learners were introduced to the purpose of club leadership, accountability, teamwork, and proper organisation. A standard ICT Club constitution template was also shared with the school to support formal club operations.
The ICT Club Handbook was provided to guide the school in areas such as club leadership, learner participation, innovation activities, digital skills development, and responsible club management. This handbook will support the patron, ICT teachers, and student leaders as they continue implementing club activities throughout the year.
The expected outcomes of the club include improved sustainability of the school computer laboratory, increased student ownership of ICT resources, stronger leadership among learners, safe and ethical use of technology, and improved practical digital skills. The club is also expected to prepare learners for future opportunities in coding, innovation, digital creation, mentorship, and national ICT-related competitions.
Learners were further informed about preparation for ANCC 2026, where ICT Club members are expected to develop teamwork, confidence, and practical innovation projects. This gave students a broader view of how their participation in the club can connect them to national opportunities in the communications and technology sector.
The school leadership engagement was another important part of the visit. Discussions with the headteacher, ICT teacher, and club patron focused on the need for regular club meetings, teacher guidance, institutional support, and long-term ownership of the ICT Club. These discussions helped position the club as a school-supported programme rather than a one-day activity.
Some challenges were noted, including unreliable power supply, inadequate ICT infrastructure, limited time for club activities, low digital literacy among some learners, and the need to sustain momentum after the launch. These challenges will require continued support, follow-up, and commitment from both the school and programme partners.
KAWA encouraged the school to allocate regular time for ICT Club activities, strengthen support from the administration and patron, and continue guiding learners in practical digital projects. Improved ICT infrastructure and reliable power will also help the club grow into a stronger centre for digital learning and innovation.
The launch at All Saints SS Ocibal marked an important step in empowering learners to become responsible digital citizens, problem solvers, and future innovators. With continued support from the school, KAWA, UCC, and UCUSAF, the ICT Club has the potential to become a meaningful platform for skills development, creativity, and sustainable use of technology in education.
KAWA sincerely appreciates UCC and UCUSAF for their continued support towards the establishment and training of ICT Clubs in schools across Uganda.
