On 17th February 2025, Fatima Aloi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Alebtong District became part of Uganda’s growing ICT Clubs network through a successful launch and capacity-building session. Coordinated by KAWA Uganda and supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the training engaged 56 students in a hands-on experience designed to introduce them to essential digital skills and responsible technology use. The activity was facilitated by Moses Wamanga from KAWA, in partnership with the school’s ICT team.

A major highlight of the session was the official establishment of the ICT Club’s leadership structure. Students took part in an organized election to fill key positions such as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. This approach fostered student ownership and accountability, creating a foundation for a sustainable club structure. To guide future operations, KAWA issued a standard ICT Club Constitution, outlining the mission, roles, membership structure, and operational procedures that will enable the club to function independently over time.

To complement the club’s formation, KAWA introduced learners to a range of tailored digital resources. Instead of relying on printed materials, students were shown how to access the official ICT Club Portal—an online platform that brings together coding tutorials, presentation slides, innovation resources, and learning guides. Each club member received the digital ICT Club Handbook, which provides clear guidance on running effective meetings, organizing events, and maintaining club records. The portal also features video tutorials and innovation-focused content to support continuous learning beyond the training day.

Students received hands-on training across four key areas. First, they were introduced to ICT lab management, where they learned about equipment care, lab scheduling, and structured maintenance. This was followed by a practical session on computer maintenance and troubleshooting, including system reinstallation, antivirus management, and identification of faulty components.

Another core component of the training addressed internet safety and cybersecurity awareness. Students were guided through strategies for protecting their personal information online, recognizing phishing threats, and avoiding harmful digital content. The final segment introduced them to basic programming using Scratch and Python, with additional exposure to Visual Studio Code. Learners also explored foundational Artificial Intelligence (AI) concepts, focusing on how such technologies can be applied to real-life challenges within their communities.

Beyond the student-focused training, KAWA held strategic engagement sessions with the school’s headteacher, ICT teachers, and club patrons. These sessions aimed to build staff capacity, align the club’s goals with the school’s broader learning objectives, and initiate the development of an annual ICT Club Activity Calendar. This calendar will provide a structured plan for continuous engagement, project implementation, and participation in innovation competitions.

KAWA Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to providing ongoing support throughout the academic year. As part of this continued engagement, the school will benefit from additional training in areas such as advanced coding, innovation project mentorship, and computer maintenance, ensuring that students and teachers remain equipped to drive digital transformation at the school level.

The launch of the ICT Club at Fatima Aloi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School represents a significant step forward in enhancing digital literacy and empowering girls in the field of ICT. With structured leadership, access to learning tools, and strong institutional support, the club is well-positioned to grow into a productive learning platform. Through continued partnership with KAWA and UCC, the school is expected to play an active role in shaping the next generation of digitally skilled learners in Alebtong District.
