In a world rapidly driven by technology, few moments are as powerful as witnessing young minds take their first bold step toward digital transformation. This was the atmosphere on 14th November 2024 at Wanyange Girls’ School, perched atop the scenic Wanyange Hill in Jinja City, as students gathered for a groundbreaking ICT Club training session led by KAWA Uganda, in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).

The day’s focus was not just on introducing computers but on empowering girls with the tools, mindset, and motivation to become the next generation of innovators. Facilitated by Mr. Moses Wamanga, a lead trainer from KAWA, the session opened a gateway for 20 enthusiastic students to explore key areas of ICT including programming, cybersecurity, maintenance, and digital safety. While the club’s leadership structure was still pending formal setup, the training laid a firm foundation and ignited strong interest in the formation of a sustainable, vibrant ICT Club.

A comprehensive club formation guide and constitution template were shared with both students and focal staff members. These tools will guide the establishment of a fully operational club structure in Term I of 2025, including elections to usher in student leadership.

“This initiative fits perfectly into our vision for Wanyange Girls. The ICT Club will be a game changer for our students,”
Ms. Deborah Basekanakyo, Headteacher.

To support hands-on learning and future club activities, KAWA provided a rich collection of digital resources, including:

  • Full access to the national ICT Clubs Portal: www.ictclubs.ug
  • A digital ICT Club Handbook to guide club planning
  • Offline training videos on Scratch, Python, cybersecurity, and computer maintenance
  • Curriculum-linked materials to support project-based learning aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The learners received orientation on ICT lab etiquette, basic troubleshooting, internet safety, and an introduction to artificial intelligence through fun, engaging activities.

“I had never heard of Scratch before today, but now I want to learn how to create my own animations,”
— Shared by an excited S.2 student.

The training also had a strong focus on responsible digital behavior, helping students understand how to protect their digital identities and use the internet safely—knowledge especially crucial for young girls navigating a connected world.

Support from school leadership was evident throughout. Mr. Martin Kasadha and Ms. Deborah Basekanakyo expressed full commitment to building the club’s future, confirming that a club calendar of activities would be finalized after elections.

Key Highlights:

  • 20 students trained in core digital and programming skills
  • Club constitution and formation guide provided
  • School staff fully engaged and committed to ICT integration
  • AI, coding, maintenance, and digital safety introduced
  • Support from KAWA committed for future mentorship and workshops

Recommendations & Next Steps:

  • Formally elect club leaders and establish club governance
  • Expand training to more students as lab capacity allows
  • Begin structured projects using KAWA tutorials and portal content
  • Organize follow-up coding clinics and competitions

KAWA Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Wanyange Girls’ School with ongoing mentorship, future training, and access to offline digital resources. With strong leadership and evident learner enthusiasm, Wanyange Girls is poised to become a center of excellence for girls in ICT, preparing students not only to consume technology—but to create it.

“The foundation has been laid. Now it’s time to build a club that changes lives,”
Mr. Moses Wamanga, KAWA Trainer.
