In the rural heart of Kwania District, a quiet digital revolution is taking shape at Aduku Secondary School. On 17th February 2025, learners, teachers, and school leaders came together in a transformative training session facilitated by KAWA Uganda to officially launch the school’s ICT Club. This initiative is part of a broader national movement to foster digital literacy, responsible ICT use, and youth-led innovation across Uganda.

Peter Wamanga, the lead trainer for the session, guided participants through a highly interactive day of learning, skill-building, and planning. Hosted at the school’s ICT lab in Aduku Town Council, the launch was more than just a symbolic event—it was a hands-on journey into the future of education and innovation.

Highlights from the ICT Club Launch & Training

One of the first major milestones was the official formation of the Aduku SS ICT Club, complete with elected student leaders tasked with organizing activities and encouraging digital creativity among their peers. A standardized ICT Club Constitution was also introduced to provide governance structure and ensure long-term sustainability.

To support the club’s functionality, KAWA provided extensive digital educational resources, including:

  • Access to the ICT Club Portal: www.ictclubs.ug, featuring downloadable curriculum materials, coding tutorials, activity templates, and more.
  • A Digital ICT Club Handbook, made available to patrons and student leaders for organizing and executing club activities.
  • A series of video tutorials and learning modules focused on Scratch, Python programming, cybersecurity, and digital project design.
  • Innovation guides aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help learners link technology with real-life community challenges.

The day’s training emphasized core digital skills development, such as:

  • ICT Lab Management: Students learned how to manage computer usage schedules, perform basic maintenance, and track ICT lab issues.
  • Basic Troubleshooting: Learners practiced scanning for viruses, reinstalling software, and identifying faulty hardware components.
  • Cybersecurity & Digital Ethics: Students were taught how to stay safe online, avoid scams, and maintain a responsible digital footprint.
  • Programming & AI: Using beginner-friendly platforms like Scratch and Python, learners were introduced to basic coding logic and emerging AI concepts, sparking ideas on how tech could solve local problems.

“Our learners now understand the bigger picture—not just using technology, but applying it to the real world,” said James Opio, a school focal teacher.
“We’re thankful that KAWA made this possible.”

Stakeholder Engagement & Commitment

In addition to student training, KAWA held a briefing session with Aduku SS administration, patrons, and ICT teachers to align on the club’s vision. Together, they initiated a draft Annual ICT Club Activity Calendar, which will map out student-led projects, workshops, and participation in inter-school competitions throughout the academic year.

“The ICT Club will be a platform for students to explore and express their creativity while learning critical digital skills,” shared Acne Susan Joan, one of the club’s patrons
