ICT Club Launched at Kiira College Butiki to Empower Student Innovation in Jinja City

Jinja City, Eastern Uganda — 24 February 2026

Kiira College Butiki has taken a significant step toward strengthening digital skills and innovation among its learners following the official launch and training of the school’s ICT Club by the KAWA ICT Clubs Team. The initiative is part of the national ICT Clubs programme supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) through the UCUSAF programme, aimed at equipping students with practical technology skills and innovation capacity.

Kiira College Butiki is located in Butiki Ward, Northern Division of Jinja City in Eastern Uganda, one of the country’s major historical and commercial regions along the shores of Lake Victoria and near the source of the River Nile. The school lies approximately 80 kilometres east of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, and about 4 kilometres from Jinja City Centre, making it an accessible institution serving learners from both urban and surrounding communities.

The launch and training activity took place on 24 February 2026 and was facilitated by Wanyana Valeria from the KAWA ICT Clubs Team. The school is headed by Mr. Ssemwanga Moses, while Mr. Kayaka John serves as the ICT Club Patron, guiding the development of digital learning activities at the school.

Encouraging Learners to Use Technology for Community Transformation

The visit aimed to officially introduce the ICT Club and familiarize learners and teachers with the objectives of the national ICT Clubs programme.

During the session, students were encouraged to see technology not only as a communication tool but also as a platform for innovation, creativity, and problem solving. Facilitators emphasized that ICT Clubs are designed to help learners develop the ability to identify challenges within their communities and use digital tools to design solutions.

This approach aligns with Uganda’s broader vision of nurturing young people who can contribute to the digital economy and knowledge-driven society.

Student Participation and Engagement

The training session brought together 65 students from Senior One to Senior Six, along with one teacher, demonstrating strong interest among learners in participating in digital skills development.

Although only one teacher present had access to a smartphone, the training was effectively delivered using a laptop computer and projector, allowing learners to follow demonstrations and discussions clearly.

Throughout the session, learners actively participated in discussions on technology, innovation, and digital opportunities available through the ICT Clubs programme.

Key Activities During the Launch

Several important activities were conducted during the ICT Club launch and training.

Learners were introduced to the ICT Clubs programme and its objectives, helping them understand how the club operates and how they can benefit from participating.

The facilitators also conducted sessions on digital literacy, technology innovation, and the importance of ICT skills in the modern world.

Students were guided on how ICT Clubs participate in technology innovation competitions, particularly the National Conference on Communications (NCC) ICT Competition, where schools showcase innovative projects developed by students.

The KAWA team also interacted with the school administration and the ICT Club patron to discuss how the club will operate within the school and how learners can be supported in developing innovative projects.

Learners were encouraged to begin identifying community problems that could potentially be solved through technology, setting the foundation for future innovation activities within the club.

Positive Outcome and Commitment from the School

The launch of the ICT Club at Kiira College Butiki was considered highly successful.

Interestingly, the school already had an existing but previously unlaunched ICT Club, and the official launch helped formalize the initiative and strengthen its activities.

The school administration expressed commitment to supporting ICT Club activities and preparing students to participate in technology innovation programmes and national ICT competitions.

This commitment demonstrates the school’s recognition of the importance of digital skills in preparing learners for future opportunities.

Recommendations for Strengthening the ICT Club

To ensure the sustainability of the ICT Club, several recommendations were proposed.

The school was encouraged to allocate regular time for ICT Club meetings and innovation activities, allowing students to consistently practice and develop their digital skills.

The ICT Club Patron was also advised to guide learners in developing projects that address real community challenges, ensuring that technology learning has a practical impact.

In addition, more support is needed to improve access to ICT equipment and digital learning resources, which will help learners fully explore innovation opportunities.

Advancing Digital Skills in Ugandan Schools

The launch of the ICT Club at Kiira College Butiki contributes to the growing network of ICT Clubs across Uganda that aim to empower learners with digital literacy, creativity, and innovation skills.

Through collaboration between schools, KAWA, and the Uganda Communications Commission, ICT Clubs continue to inspire students to become future innovators, problem solvers, and technology leaders.

As these initiatives expand, they are expected to play a crucial role in preparing Uganda’s young generation to actively participate in the digital transformation of education and the national economy.
