On Thursday, 13th March 2025, Mpanga Secondary School in Fort Portal Tourism City officially launched its ICT Club through a practical and interactive training session coordinated by KAWA Uganda under the ICT Clubs initiative of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The event, held at the school’s ICT laboratory in Booma East, Njara Division, marked a new chapter in the school’s digital development journey.

The training brought together six members of staff and a group of learners—mostly from Senior Two—who were introduced to the key responsibilities and benefits of participating in a school-based ICT Club. Teachers, all of whom had smart devices, supported learners throughout the session, creating a smooth facilitation experience.

Participants used 37 fully networked desktop computers to explore a structured series of topics. The session began with an overview of what ICT Clubs are and how they function as tools for promoting digital literacy and encouraging responsible use of school ICT resources. Students were then trained on ICT lab maintenance practices, including equipment scheduling, reporting faults, and ensuring long-term sustainability of the facility.

Learners also received step-by-step guidance on how to perform basic computer maintenance. This included identifying and resolving common issues, managing software updates, and implementing antivirus protection. A focused segment on internet safety and cybersecurity raised awareness on topics such as online privacy, cyberbullying, and recognizing potential digital threats.

Beyond technical skills, the facilitators introduced learners to programming basics, the use of advanced digital tools, and how to access and manage online content for learning purposes. These sessions helped expand student understanding of digital skills beyond what is typically taught in class. Students also learned about the fundamentals of networking and safe internet use, with an emphasis on maximizing online resources to support their studies.

The training concluded with a discussion around innovation opportunities and competitions supported by UCC and UCUSAF. Learners were encouraged to think creatively and begin shaping ideas for projects that address local problems using technology. These competitions are designed to foster innovation, teamwork, and confidence among ICT Club members.

However, one of the key concerns raised during the session was the need for stronger teacher capacity in specialized areas like programming and cybersecurity. While teacher involvement in the session was commendable, facilitators noted that consistent professional development would be necessary to ensure long-term success and sustainability of the club’s activities.

Another recommendation involved expanding club participation beyond Senior Two learners. Involving students across multiple classes would promote continuity, foster mentorship, and ensure broader ownership of the club’s vision and activities.

With the ICT Club now established and the foundation laid, Mpanga Secondary School is well-positioned to become a key contributor to Uganda’s digital transformation efforts. Ongoing mentorship and technical support from KAWA and UCC will help the school sustain momentum and actively participate in national ICT development programs.
