Namagabi Senior Secondary School took a bold step into the digital future by launching its official ICT Club, a visionary initiative facilitated by KAWA Uganda in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and UCUSAF. This transformative training day equipped learners with practical ICT skills and sparked a culture of responsibility, innovation, and curiosity in the school’s digital space.

The training introduced students to the purpose and structure of the ICT Club, emphasizing its role in promoting digital literacy, innovation, and shared stewardship of the ICT lab. Learners explored ICT Lab Management and Sustainability, where they were guided on proper equipment usage, routine maintenance, and long-term preservation of digital resources.

A hands-on session in Basic Computer Maintenance and Troubleshooting empowered students to confidently address common hardware and software issues—key to building problem-solving and self-reliance. Another major highlight was the Internet Safety and Cybersecurity Awareness module, which sensitized learners to ethical internet use, data privacy, and safeguarding digital identities—an essential foundation in today’s online environment.

In an effort to expand students’ horizons beyond traditional syllabi, the training featured a session on Digital Skills Beyond the Curriculum, offering insight into advanced digital tools, coding basics, and real-world applications of ICT in everyday problem-solving. The learners were also introduced to Networking and Internet Usage, learning how to securely navigate online spaces and maximize learning through digital connectivity.

Another inspiring moment came during the Engagement with UCC and UCUSAF, where students discovered how their voices could shape national ICT initiatives, contribute ideas, and participate in policy-informing feedback loops. The day concluded with an emphasis on Encouraging Innovation and ICT Competitions, presenting pathways for students to showcase creativity and represent their school at regional and national levels.

Despite the impactful experience, the session revealed a few challenges. Online safety and ethical internet use, particularly during student research, emerged as an area requiring urgent reinforcement. Additionally, most participants were from Senior Two, highlighting the need to engage students from other classes for greater inclusivity.

Going forward, the report recommends:

  • Increasing outreach to other class levels during future sessions.
  • Integrating more modules on ethical internet behavior.
  • Continuing mentorship from KAWA and UCC to sustain progress and innovation.

With 14 networked computers and a team of motivated teachers and learners, Namagabi S.S. is now well on its way to becoming a beacon of digital excellence. The ICT Club is not just an extracurricular activity—it’s a launchpad for future innovators, coders, and digital leaders in Kayunga and beyond.
