ICT Club Launched at Kworus Secondary School to Advance Digital Learning in Kween District

KWEEN DISTRICT, SEBEI SUB-REGION, EASTERN UGANDA — Kworus Secondary School has strengthened its commitment to digital education following the successful launch and training of its ICT Club on Monday, 20th February 2025.

The initiative was facilitated by Moses Wamanga under the Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) as part of the national ICT Clubs programme supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund UCUSAF.

About Kworus Secondary School

Kworus Secondary School is located in Kwanyiy, Kapkwata Parish in Kween District, within the Sebei sub-region of Eastern Uganda. Kween District lies on the slopes of Mount Elgon, approximately 270–300 kilometers northeast of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.

The district’s main urban center is Binyiny Town, which serves as the administrative headquarters and a key access point to surrounding rural communities. The school serves learners from these communities and is steadily integrating ICT into its teaching and learning processes.

Purpose of the ICT Club Launch

The launch aimed to establish a vibrant ICT Club that empowers students with practical digital skills, innovation capacity, and responsibility in managing ICT resources within the school.

The programme also introduced learners and school leadership to the broader vision of ICT Clubs as platforms for digital transformation and skills development in Uganda’s education sector.

Learners Inspired by Digital Opportunities

At the start of the training, students expressed a strong desire to:

  • Acquire practical computer skills beyond the classroom
  • Learn maintenance and protection of ICT equipment
  • Improve their use of the internet safely and effectively
  • Explore coding, innovation, and digital creativity

Many learners also showed interest in teamwork, mentorship, and problem-solving, reflecting a growing awareness of opportunities in the digital world.

Building Responsible and Skilled ICT Leaders

During the session, facilitators emphasized that the ICT Club is designed to:

  • Support ICT laboratory sustainability and management
  • Promote student ownership and accountability
  • Provide hands-on digital skills training

This approach ensures that students are not only users of technology but also custodians and innovators within their school environment.

National Perspective on ICT Skills

The official launch featured a recorded message from UCC Executive Director, Mr. Nyombi Thembo, who highlighted the importance of digital skills, innovation, and responsible technology use.

His message encouraged learners to actively participate in the programme and contribute to the sustainability of ICT resources in their school.

Establishing a Strong ICT Club Structure

KAWA worked closely with the school administration led by Headteacher Chelangat Fred, alongside ICT teachers, to establish a structured and functional ICT Club.

Student leaders were selected and guided on leadership roles, teamwork, and accountability. A standard ICT Club constitution template was also shared to guide operations.

ICT Club Handbook and Learning Resources

The school received the ICT Club Handbook, which provides guidance on:

  • Club leadership and management
  • Learner participation and engagement
  • Innovation and project development
  • Digital skills progression

Learners were also introduced to the ICT Clubs online platform (www.ictclubs.ug) for continued access to learning materials and innovation resources.

Practical Digital Skills Training

The training sessions covered essential areas of digital competence, including:

  • ICT lab management and sustainability
  • Basic computer maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Internet safety and cybersecurity awareness
  • Introduction to coding and innovation
  • Exposure to Artificial Intelligence concepts

The sessions emphasized practical application, safe internet use, and problem-solving skills.

Expected Impact of the ICT Club

The ICT Club is expected to transform the school’s digital landscape through:

  • Sustainable ICT lab management by students
  • Increased leadership and responsibility among learners

Pathway to NCC 2026

Learners were encouraged to actively engage in ICT Club activities as preparation for participation in the National Conference on Communications (NCC) 2026.

This opportunity is expected to inspire students to develop innovative projects, strengthen teamwork, and apply technology to solve real-world challenges.

Strengthening School Support Systems

KAWA engaged school leadership and ICT teachers to reinforce the importance of:

  • Regular ICT Club meetings
  • Continuous mentorship and guidance
  • Institutional support for sustainability

Addressing Key Challenges

Some challenges identified include:

  • Unreliable power supply
  • Limited ICT infrastructure
  • Time constraints for club activities
  • Varying levels of digital literacy among students

Addressing these issues will be critical to ensuring the growth and long-term success of the ICT Club.

  • Allocate dedicated time for ICT Club activities
  • Strengthen mentorship and administrative support
