ICT Club Launch in Jinja City: Mpumudde Seed Secondary School Embraces Digital Innovation

Mpumudde Seed Secondary School, located in Mpumudde–Kimaka Division in Jinja within the Eastern Region of Uganda, has officially launched its ICT Club under a national programme aimed at promoting digital skills and innovation among learners. This ICT Club launch in Jinja City highlights the growing commitment of schools to integrate technology into education.

The school is situated approximately 75–85 kilometers east of Kampala along the Kampala–Jinja highway, making it part of one of Uganda’s most active industrial and educational corridors. Its proximity to Jinja’s main town center provides learners with increased exposure to technology-driven opportunities and innovation ecosystems.

The ICT Club launch and training were conducted by Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) under the ICT Clubs programme supported by the Uganda Communications Commission and the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund. The session was facilitated by Ms. Valeria Wanyana, focusing on empowering students with practical ICT knowledge and innovation skills.

Promoting Technology and Innovation in Schools

The launch aimed to introduce learners and teachers to the objectives of the ICT Clubs programme while encouraging students to embrace technology as a tool for solving real-world problems within their communities.

A total of 23 students from Senior One to Senior Six participated in the training, alongside teachers who actively supported the session. Learners were sensitized on the importance of digital skills, innovation, and the role of ICT in shaping future careers.

Students were encouraged to think creatively and begin identifying community challenges that can be addressed through technology, laying a foundation for innovation-driven learning.

Key Activities During the ICT Club Launch

The training session included several important activities designed to equip learners with foundational ICT knowledge:

  • Introduction to the ICT Clubs programme and its objectives
  • Sensitization on digital skills, technology use, and innovation
  • Guidance on ICT project development and participation in national platforms
  • Engagement with school leadership on ICT Club operations
  • Mobilization of students to actively join and participate in the ICT Club

Learners were also introduced to opportunities for participation in national programmes, including the National Conference on Communications (NCC) 2026, where they can showcase their ICT innovations and projects.

The ICT Club at Mpumudde Seed Secondary School is expected to play a key role in strengthening digital learning within the school. With available resources such as desktop computers and a projector, students have a starting point for practical engagement with technology.

The initiative emphasizes:

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the successful launch, a few challenges were identified that may affect the growth of the ICT Club:

  • Need for continuous teacher training and ICT capacity building

Addressing these challenges will be essential in ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of the ICT Club.

The school leadership, under Headteacher Mr. Byegarazo Simon Peter and ICT Club Patron Mr. Bewayo Emmanuel, expressed commitment to supporting the initiative and ensuring its success.
