KAWA Uganda successfully conducted an ICT Club launch and training session at Aduku Secondary School in Aduku Town Council, Kwania District, on 17th February 2025. The activity was part of the national ICT Clubs Initiative aimed at strengthening digital literacy, practical ICT skills, responsible technology use, and innovation among learners.

The training was facilitated by Peter Wamanga and supported by the school leadership, ICT teachers, patrons, and focal persons. The session created an important foundation for a functional and sustainable ICT Club that will help students explore technology, develop creativity, and use digital skills to solve real-life challenges.

One of the key achievements of the training was the establishment of the ICT Club and its leadership structure. Students were guided through the process of electing club leaders, which helped promote responsibility, teamwork, and active learner participation. A standard ICT Club Constitution was also provided to guide the club’s operations, leadership, and long-term sustainability.

To support the club’s activities, KAWA Uganda shared several educational resources with the school. These included access to the ICT Clubs Portal, digital copies of the ICT Club Handbook, coding tutorials, training videos, activity templates, and innovation curriculum materials. These resources will help learners continue practising and improving their digital skills beyond the training session.

The training also focused on practical digital skills for club members. Students were introduced to ICT laboratory organisation, proper use and care of computer resources, scheduling computer access, maintaining equipment, and reporting technical issues in an organised way.

Learners also received basic training in computer maintenance and troubleshooting. The session included practical demonstrations on virus scanning, system reinstallation, and identifying simple hardware and software problems. These skills are important in helping students take better care of ICT resources within the school.

Cyber safety and responsible technology use were also covered during the training. Students learnt about safe browsing, avoiding online scams, protecting personal information, and managing their digital footprint responsibly. This helped them understand that digital skills must be used safely, ethically, and wisely.

In addition, learners were introduced to basic programming and Artificial Intelligence concepts. They explored coding using Scratch and Python and discussed how AI can be applied to solve local problems in education, agriculture, communication, and community development.

KAWA Uganda also engaged the Headteacher, ICT teachers, and patrons to ensure that the club receives proper guidance and support. An initial draft of the ICT Club Annual Activity Calendar was started and will be finalised in collaboration with the school staff.

KAWA Uganda will continue supporting Aduku Secondary School through mentorship, refresher sessions, advanced coding workshops, ICT project guidance, and preparation for participation in national digital innovation competitions.

The launch and training at Aduku Secondary School marked an important step in promoting digital learning in Kwania District. With committed school leadership, trained learners, and access to useful learning resources, the club is well-positioned to grow into a strong centre of innovation, creativity, and digital skills development.
