Busara High Hill Students Discover the Power of Apps, Coding, and Digital Presence
In the mountainous landscape of Kasese District, learners at Busara High Hill Secondary School took an important step into the world of digital innovation. On Tuesday, 10th June 2025, KAWA Uganda, in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission, conducted an ICT Club launch and practical training session at the school’s computer laboratory.
The training was held at Busara High Hill Secondary School, located on Busara Hill in the Rwenzori Region. It was facilitated by Mubiru Lawrence G. from KAWA Uganda, with support from the school leadership, including the Headteacher, Muhindo Rodson, and the ICT Club Patron, Masereka Rojabu.
For the learners and teachers, the launch was a moment of excitement and opportunity. The school did not previously have an ICT Club, and becoming part of the KAWA-UCC ICT Clubs programme was warmly welcomed by both students and staff. The school community especially appreciated the opportunity because of its location in what they described as a hard-to-reach area.
A total of 24 students and 1 ICT teacher participated in the session. The learners were introduced to practical digital skills that can help them create, innovate, and solve problems using technology. The training focused on mobile app development using MIT App Inventor, programming using Visual Studio Code, and building a strong digital presence.
One of the most exciting parts of the training was the introduction to MIT App Inventor. Students showed great interest in the tool and described it as a quick way of doing complex things. Through hands-on activities, they gained basic skills in creating mobile applications and began to see how technology can be used to develop useful solutions.
The learners were also introduced to Visual Studio Code, which opened their minds to the world of programming and web-based systems. By the end of the session, several club members expressed interest in taking on projects such as web-based system development and mobile application development.
Another important area covered was digital presence, with special attention given to the power of Google accounts. Learners explored how a Google account can support learning, communication, collaboration, file storage, online research, and access to useful digital tools.
The session was highly successful, with no major training challenges reported. The main challenge noted was transport to the school due to the mountainous terrain, which made the journey risky and difficult.
The launch of the ICT Club at Busara High Hill Secondary School has opened a new door for learners in the Rwenzori Region. With continued support from KAWA Uganda, UCC, the school leadership, and the ICT Club Patron, the club is expected to become a strong platform for digital skills, creativity, innovation, and project-based learning.
