Technology becomes more meaningful when learners use it to solve the problems around them. This was the central message during the ICT Club launch and training held at Mpumudde Seed Secondary School in Jinja City on 24th February 2026.

The visit was conducted under the KAWA CONNECT ICT Clubs programme and focused on introducing learners and teachers to the purpose of ICT Clubs, practical digital skills, innovation, and community problem-solving. The activity also prepared learners to begin thinking about ICT projects that can address real needs within their school and surrounding community.

Mpumudde Seed Secondary School is located in Mpumudde–Kimaka Division, Jinja City. The launch was supported by the school leadership, including the Headteacher, Byegarazo Simon Peter, and the ICT Club Patron, Bewayo Emmanuel. The reporting officer for the activity was Wanyana Valeria from KAWA CONNECT ICT Clubs.

The session brought together 23 students from Senior One to Senior Six and 3 teachers. All the teachers had smartphones, which is important for communication, follow-up, and supporting ICT Club activities. A laptop and projector were also used during the training session to support presentation and demonstration.

During the launch, learners were introduced to the ICT Clubs programme and its objectives. They were sensitised about the importance of technology, digital skills, creativity, innovation, and responsible use of ICT in education.

The learners were also guided on how ICT projects can be developed from simple ideas into practical solutions. Special attention was given to future participation in competitions such as the NCC ICT Competition, as well as engagement with UCC and UCUSAF on ICT-related opportunities.

A key part of the session involved interaction with the school administration and the ICT Club Patron. This helped clarify how the club will operate within the school, how learners will be guided, and how the school can support regular club activities.

Students were encouraged to join the ICT Club and begin identifying community problems that technology can help solve. This approach is important because it helps learners move beyond theory and begin using ICT as a tool for practical innovation.

The launch was successful and well received by both learners and the school administration. The school expressed commitment to supporting ICT Club activities and preparing students to participate in digital innovation programmes and competitions.

However, a few challenges were identified. Limited internet connectivity may affect access to online learning resources, while teacher training and competency in ICT remain important areas that need continued support.

The report recommended that the school should allocate regular time for ICT Club meetings. It also encouraged the ICT Patron to guide learners in developing projects that solve real community problems. In addition, more support is needed to improve access to ICT equipment and digital learning resources.

The launch at Mpumudde Seed Secondary School marks an important step in building a culture of digital learning and innovation in Jinja City. With committed school leadership, active learners, and continued support from KAWA CONNECT ICT Clubs, the school is well positioned to nurture young people who can use technology to create meaningful change.
