KAWA Uganda conducted an ICT Club training activity at Lukole Seed Secondary School in Luweero District on 4th March 2025. The school is located in Nyimbwa Sub-county, Bajjo Parish.

The training brought together 8 staff members and focused on strengthening the school’s capacity to support ICT Club activities, promote digital literacy, and encourage responsible use of the ICT laboratory. All the teachers who attended had access to smart devices such as smartphones or tablets, which is a positive step towards supporting digital communication and follow-up learning.

During the training, participants were introduced to the purpose of the ICT Club and its role in promoting digital literacy, innovation, teamwork, and learner responsibility in the use of ICT resources. The session helped teachers understand how an ICT Club can support students beyond the ordinary classroom curriculum.

A major focus was ICT laboratory management and sustainability. Teachers discussed best practices for maintaining computers, ensuring proper use of equipment, keeping the ICT lab organised, and supporting future learners through responsible management of available ICT resources.

The training also covered basic computer maintenance and troubleshooting. Participants were introduced to practical ways of identifying common computer problems, performing software updates, preventing system failures, and knowing when technical support is needed.

Internet safety and cybersecurity awareness were also discussed. Teachers were guided on how to help learners use the internet safely, protect personal information, avoid online threats, and develop responsible digital habits.

The session further explored digital skills beyond the curriculum. This included the use of advanced computer applications, coding basics, and digital tools that can support research, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving among learners.

Participants were also introduced to networking and internet usage. The training covered basic ideas on how networks work, safe internet connection practices, and how to optimise internet resources for learning.

Another important area covered was engagement with UCC and UCUSAF on ICT matters. Teachers discussed how students can benefit from ICT initiatives, provide feedback, participate in digital opportunities, and become active contributors to technology development in schools.

The training also encouraged innovation and ICT competitions. Teachers were guided on how learners can develop creative digital projects and prepare for participation in local and national ICT competitions.

A total of 19 networked computers were used during the training, giving participants an opportunity to relate the discussions to the available ICT resources at the school.

One challenge identified was the need to strengthen student engagement in ICT skills. This highlights the importance of regular club activities, practical projects, mentorship, and continuous encouragement so that learners can become more active and confident in using technology.

The ICT Club training at Lukole Seed Secondary School was an important step towards building a stronger digital learning culture in Luweero District. With committed teachers, available networked computers, and continued support, the school is well-positioned to develop an active ICT Club that promotes innovation, responsibility, and practical digital skills among learners.
