Launch of ICT Club at St. Joseph Kinaaba Community Secondary School in Kanungu
KAWA Uganda, in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission, successfully conducted the official launch and training of the ICT Club at St. Joseph Kinaaba Community Secondary School in Kanungu District on Thursday, 12th June 2025.
The training was facilitated by Noah Okwalinga from KAWA Uganda. The school leadership, including the Headteacher, Baseinah Tumuhimbise, and the ICT Club Patron, Birungi Eliab, supported the launch and encouraged learners to embrace digital skills for learning, innovation, and future career opportunities.
The launch attracted 10 students from Senior Two and Senior Three. The students participated actively in the session, with 8 male students and 2 female students taking part in the training activities.
During the session, learners were introduced to the purpose, goals, and structure of the ICT Club. They were guided on how the club can support digital literacy, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and practical technology learning within the school.
The learners were also introduced to KAWA CONNECT resources, including digital videos, eBooks, activity modules, simulations, interactive tasks, and other offline learning resources. These materials are designed to help learners continue learning even in environments with limited internet access.
The training also included hands-on exposure to important digital tools. Learners were introduced to Visual Studio Code, MIT App Inventor for mobile app development, and Scratch programming for beginners. These tools are useful in helping students understand coding, app development, and basic creative programming.
Although the launch was successful, one key challenge identified was the lack of a projector at the school. This made it difficult to clearly share the presentation and play the Executive Director’s message during the training session.
To strengthen the club further, the report recommended the provision of additional ICT equipment such as laptops, routers, and projectors. It also recommended continued mentorship from KAWA and UCC through follow-up sessions, either physically or virtually. In addition, the club leaders were encouraged to begin submitting monthly reports showing club activities, student progress, and any support needs.
The ICT Club at St. Joseph Kinaaba Community Secondary School is now active and ready to support learners in acquiring relevant digital skills. With continued support from UCC and KAWA Uganda, the club is expected to become a centre of innovation where learners can explore, experiment, and excel in the digital world.
